Nitrogen
generators are used to generate pure nitrogen in a nitrogen gas plant. These
generators can range from small sized portable nitrogen generator units to
large tonnage nitrogen plants suitable for chemical processing, refining and
other applications. Generators are designed to generate, or create,
nitrogen. The use of nitrogen generators removes the problems involved with
handling gas cylinders. Moreover, nitrogen generators cost less than gas
cylinders. The nitrogen generators can produce gas up to 99.9 % purity.
Nitrogen Generation Technique
Nitrogen generators operate under three main techniques.
- Pressure swing adsorption technology: In the first case, the
generator uses pressure swing adsorption technology and a proprietary
carbon molecular sieve. Compressed air is fed into the sieve bed. This
air is passed through the column. Here all impurities and moistures are
removed. Pure nitrogen exists at the top of the column, which is stored
in a small tank or reservoir. At a specified time, a small amount of
pure nitrogen is used to back flush the sieve bed and this regenerates
the system. In this generator the gas flow is continuous and controlled
by a mass flow controller.
- Nitrogen Membrane Technology: Another technique of the
working of the nitrogen generator is the nitrogen membrane technology.
By using membrane technology, compressed air is provided from dedicated
air compressor to separate nitrogen from air. The nitrogen membrane
generator also produce a dependable and economical supply of nitrogen.
- Cryogenic Air Distillation: Another technology in nitrogen
generators is the use of cryogenic air distillation, which is used to
generate nitrogen. It is similar to PSA technology. Here the air is
compressed and then purified within the nitrogen generator. Later, the
air is cooled with a special cooling unit. The air runs through various
filters when it runs through nitrogen generators. This process leads to
the purification and cooling of the air. Within the oxygen liquid, the
oxygen and nitrogen are then separated. The oxygen stays at the bottom,
while the nitrogen remains on top. The entire process makes the nitrogen
generators to replenish themselves automatically. This is done by way of
the low temperature inside the nitrogen generators, which mixes a small
amount of liquid nitrogen into the nitrogen that is already produced.
