Oxygen generators are oxygen generating systems used widely in gas plants.
Available in various sizes from small sized portable units to large plant
sizes, these generators produce high-quality oxygen and are also used purify
water or wastewater.
How Oxygen is Produced?
Most oxygen generators make use of the molecular sieve technology to
produce oxygen.
Pressure Swing Adsorption Generator
One common technique is P.S.A (Pressure Swing Adsorption) process where
adsorption of Nitrogen is carried out by using molecular sieves. Consisting
of two adsorption vessels filled with molecular sieves, these vessels are
charged one after the other with compressed air where nitrogen and other
impurities are adsorbed. Oxygen then flows into an oxygen surge tank. Oxygen
comes out as product gas. The other vessel is depressurized to atmospheric
pressure. It is purged with little quantity of Oxygen coming out from other
vessel, which regenerates molecular sieves for use in next round. Thus the
two vessels keep cycling alternately in oxygen production and regeneration
making oxygen gas available all the time.
Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption Generator
In the VPSA process, there are two or three molecular sieves vessels which
cycle one after the other in production and in regeneration. Feed air
pressure gives oxygen production. Regeneration of molecular sieves is done
by a vacuum pump. The waste gas is around 85% nitrogen and 15% oxygen which
is vented to atmosphere through a silencer. Product Oxygen gas purity is 90
to 95% in such process.
Applications of Oxygen Generators
The oxygen generators have found wide applications in areas like medical
area sterilization, drinking water treatment, environment air treatment and
many more. They are designed to deliver purified oxygen in medical and
industrial applications. In hospitals, these generators are used by patients
suffering from asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. Oxygen generators have
important industrial applications like they are used to power pneumatic
tools. They supply highly purified oxygen to welding torches. They can also
reduce airborne contaminants that can interfere with manufacturing
processes.
