Acetylene plants are available in capacities from 25m3/hr to 200m3/Hr & are quite automatic in nature. The reaction of calcium carbide with water leads to the production of acetylene in a Stationary Carbide to Water type Automatic Acetylene Generator. Calcium carbide is fed from the top of the generator shell where ample quantity of water is already held & which yields the following reaction :

CaC2+2H2O = C2H2 + Ca(OH)2 + 27,000 Calories (heat generated)

The main concern was safety while designing the plant & accordingly the protection of equipment & personnel Flash Back Arrestors, High Pressure Reverse Flow check valves, safety valves and complete gouging units were installed. While, auto controls, safety valves, auto vent valves, non-return valves and Flash Back Arrestors allow the plant to operate in any condition.

Acetylene Generator :
Majorly consisting of a twin Hooper, it has :
  • Agitator assisted with its drive unit
  • Carbide Hooper screw feeder accompanied with its drive
  • Safety relief valves drain system
  • Flash back arrestor
  • Automatic control system
The Acetylene Generator can be set to operate at any given temperature irrespective of the carbide size usage & the cooling water temperature.

Chemical Purifier :
There are two layers of regenerative chemicals for the removal of additional impurities & the atmospheric air reactivate the purifying agent which may be re-used. In order to maintain the continuous operation, one extra charge of chemicals can be kept in open wooden trolley while chlorinated rubber paint is used as an anti corrosive measure for coating inside the vessel. The sections are charged with purified mass which easily allows the absorption of gases like H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide) and PH3 (Phosphene), etc allowing them to obtain high purity 99.6%. Atleast 2 purifiers are connected in series.

Cooler Condenser :
It even removes lime particles and condenses them while cooling the acetylene.

LP Drier (Calcium Chloride drier) :
It maintains the proper acetylene moisture content for purification which is actually filled with calcium chloride.

Ammonia Water/Washer Scrubber :
Ammonia is removed from acetylene by the vertical vessel fitted with level gauge and water make up line in order to maintain purity of superior level. This equipment is even used for removing the additional impurities from the gas & it is very well installed between the chemical purifier and the high-pressure compressor.

Acetylene Compressor :
This machine equipped with a pressure gauge which monitors the interstage pressure has three vital stages of the compressor. The normal reciprocating Piston Type Oil lubricated water is submerged with safety valve, flame arrestor, pressure gauge. This three stage machine avoids all pressurized gas to come in contact with air & cools down the components constantly whenever immersed in water. The compressor is drawn by flame proof motor from outside the tank.

No Loss Carbide Charge :
A high pressure hydraulically operated valve seals a particular section from the generator which leads to no loss or wastage of carbide while charging. With automatic controls, they require less maintenance from the operator. Quite safe, the machine has a warning alarm bell which automatically rings whenever there is a fault & continues till it gets fixed.

High Pressure Drier :
These are mounted on the compressor for easy access & features a flame arrestor for safety purpose. For the removal of oil & water vapor from the acetylene after compressor, there is a back pressure valve is for maintaining minimum of 14 bars. Atleast three high pressure vessel batteries are as well in there where
  • First is filled with metal filler
  • Second & third filled with anhydrous calcium chloride
To avoid any void in the high pressure area going against the safety, the high pressure drier is completely filled up with Calcium Chloride.

Filling Manifold :
Atleast 140 cylinder manifold are there where flame arrestors on each side of the shutoff valve protects these manifolds. It has an "o" ring style hand wheel connection to each cylinder as well.

The acetylene gas manifold has got two headers fitted with non-return valves, one flash back arrestors, pressure gauge and manual isolation valves.

Instrument Air Compressor :
This instrument is driven by a flameproof motor with a buffer tank.

Acetone Pump ~ Electrical :
A geared motor pump, it is actually coupled with motor by love-joy coupling & even features two parts which are namely the suction port and the discharge port where suction port is provided with extended pipe and foot value which helps in reaching the bottom of the acetone drum. The acetone pump is supplied along with the plant for the charging of acetone in cylinders.

Level Controls :
In the generator, it maintains a particular level which has the provision for water entry in the carbide hop if the level is above normal.

Level Alarm :
The pressure inside the acetylene generator is controlled by a meteoroid switch.

Pressure Alarm :
The alarm is connected with a pressure switch. It plays a significant role in the plant's safety.

Scale Cylinder Weight :
For simplifying acetone additions and weighing cylinders, there are special stands.

Drain Back Manifolds :
it helps in safely recovering the acetylene gas from problems cylinders.

Acetylene gas line :
This actually is a complete set of acetylene gas line for low and high pressure piping with complete fitting M.S. seamless schedule 40 for high pressure line galvanized Iron "C" class heavy duty pipes for low pressure. All this is as well supplied by the company.

Carbide Bucket :
The calcium carbide is charged into Hoppers by M.S. Container.

Distribution Panel :Featuring all vital electrical connections which are suitable for supply of Voltage 415 Volts, 3 Phase, 50 HZ, AC supply.
